Poland’s nine majestic mountain ranges

The southern part of Poland is characterised by rich mountainous terrain. Incredible peaks adorned with unpretentious natural creations attract many hiking enthusiasts.

Świętokrzyskie Mountains

The Świętokrzyskie Mountains are a low mountain range. They occupy an area in the south-central part of the country. The peak is Łysica, whose height is 614 m above sea level. The mountains are the oldest in the country – they were formed about 500 million years ago). The terrain is impressive with rocky slopes, dense forests and valleys.

Tatry

The Tatry is the highest mountain range in Poland. It is situated in the southern part where the border with Slovakia meets. The peak is called Rysy, which reaches a height of 2499 metres above sea level. The Tatras is the only range of its kind in the country. The main attraction is the Sea Eye Lake with emerald-coloured water.

The Pieniny

Not far from the Tatras, there is another amazing mountain range called Pieniny. It occupies an area in the north-east of the Tatras, and the peak is the Three Crowns with a height of 982 metres. The main attraction is the Dunajec River. Another trademark of the Pieniny is the mighty pine trees growing on the steep slopes.

Gorce

If you head northwards from Pieniny, you might find the Gorce range. Its highest point is Mt Turbacz, which reaches a height of 1314 metres. The system is a long set of mountain ranges with curves in the form of luxurious tranquil valleys. There are also impressive coniferous and beech forests.

The Beskid Żywiecki

The Beskid Żywiecki is another mountain range in Poland. It is the second highest in the country. You can find the natural wonders by going eastwards from Gorce. The highest point is Babia Góra, rising to 1,725 metres above sea level. The beauty of the place is its incredible scenery. The main attraction is the waterfall in Sopotnia Wielka. It is 10 metres high.

Śląskie Beskid Śląski

Beskid Śląski is situated on the west side of the Beskid Żywiecki. Both massifs are parts of a single mountain system called the Beskid. The highest peak of the Silesian Mountains is Skrzyczne, whose height is 1257 m above sea level. Barania Góra is famous for the source of the Vistula River. The main attraction of the region is Jaworzynka, which is a border of three countries: Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic.

Bieszczady

The Bieszczady are situated in the south-eastern part of Poland. It is also a crossroads of 3 borders: Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. Their intersection can be found on Mt Krzemieniec. The highest point of the Bieszczady is Tarnica, which reaches 1,346 metres. The area is famous for its beech forests.

The Karkonosze

The Giant Mountains stretch along the southern Polish border. The Śnieżka Peak reaches a height of 1603 metres. The Karkonosze Mountains are one of the highest in Poland, thanks to which you can enjoy incredible views. There is also a waterfall called Szklarka, which reaches 13 metres.

Table Mountains

The Góry Stołowe are situated in the south-western part of the Karkonosze. The range includes flat horizontal layers of different rocks. The highest point is called Szczeliniec Wielki and it reaches 919 metres above sea level. It has the shape of a massive plateau, which adds to the originality of the terrain. A stone labyrinth on the Wandering Rock is also present.
